Daniel J. Chambers, 88, of West Chester and Muncy Valley, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at his Muncy Valley farm surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 7, 1933 in West Chester, PA, he was the son of the late J. Herbert and Alice Corcoran Chambers.
Dan grew up in West Chester and graduated from the Malvern Preparatory School. He was a journeyman electrician and a lifelong member of the IBEW Electrical Workers, Local 654. Dan was also co-owner of Kehoe Electrical Construction, Inc. in West Chester. Together with Ruth, his wife of 62 years, Dan raised five children, along with three nieces and a nephew. His real joy was entertaining his five grandchildren and then eight great-grandchildren with stories and magic tricks. He loved to see them laugh as he pulled out his bag of tricks and silly magic stunts.
Dan was a successful businessman and very community minded. He volunteered his time to a variety of organizations in both Chester and Sullivan Counties. In Chester County where he was born and raised, he was a life member of the First West Chester Fire Company where he also held the position of President of the Fire Company for 13 years. He was a life member and Fourth Degree Knight of Knights of Columbus Council #1333. A great source of pride for him was his commitment to help those with disabilities. To that end, he served for over thirty years as a member of the Board of Directors of Handi-Crafters in Thorndale, PA, an agency that empowers individuals with disabilities to lead more productive and fulfilling lives. In Sullivan County, where he made his second home, he served on the Lake Mokoma Association board including two years as president. He also served on the Davidson Township Sewer Authority for several years.
In his retirement, Dan enjoyed collecting and selling antiques and opened an antique shop, Swampoodle Emporium, near his farm in Sonestown, Pa. He delighted in talking to anyone who stopped by to search through his treasures. His many friends will remember his quick wit and his countless stories. He did enjoy telling a good story.
Dan was predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth, who passed away in 2018, and by his son, Danny, Jr., in 2005.
Dan is survived by his children, Patty (Charlie) Hauck, William (Julie) Chambers, Alice (Bob) Carpenter, and Ellen (Chris) Koschak; the nieces and a nephew Kathy (Andy) Lancashire, Lizzy Yoder, Ellen Rulon and Bert (Nancy) Chambers, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Dan is also survived by his sister, Ellen (Bill) Barton and brother, Tom (Elaine) Chambers.
A mass of Christian burial along with a celebration of Dan’s life will take place in West Chester, Pennsylvania at a date and time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dan’s memory may be made to Handi-Crafters, Inc., a special place for special people, at 215 Barley Sheaf Rd., Thorndale, PA 19320-2321.
