Edward Ott Obituary

Edward N. “Ed” Ott, 72, formerly of Muncy, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024, surrounded by family in Danville.

Born July 11, 1951 in Muncy, he was the son of the late Howard N. and Esther G. (Belles) Ott. On July 10, 1987 he married the former Susanne Rathmell.

Ed was a 1970 graduate of Muncy High School and was one of their best all-around athletes ever. He lettered three years in football and set numerous West Branch Valley records. He was also an excellent wrestler, as a district and regional champ and finished as a state runner-up his senior year. Also excelling in Little League, Legion, and West Branch baseball, Ed was drafted in the 23rd round of the 1970 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. After four years in the minors, Ed made it to the majors, and played 8 seasons as a catcher. In 1979, he was instrumental in helping the Pirates win the World Series Championship. He also briefly played for the California Angels. Ed went on to coach for the Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Detroit Tigers. He was inducted in 1976 to the Muncy High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 1996 he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife Susanne, of Coudersport, Ed is survived by a daughter, Michelle Anderson and her husband Josh, of Sarasota, Florida; a brother, Ron Ott, with whom he lived, in Danville; and a sister, Peggy Mason and her husband Dennis, of Holden, Massachusetts.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howdie and Tom Ott; and a sister, Jean.

In keeping with his wishes, no services will be held.

The family suggests donations in Ed’s memory be made to a charity of one’s choice.
