John "Jack" Samuel Woodling, Jr., 81, of Hughesville, jumped on his bicycle for his final ride to Heaven to join his parents and siblings on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at UPMC Susquehanna Regional Medical Center, Williamsport.
He was born August 3, 1938 in Clinton Township, Lycoming County, the ninth of 13 children of John Samuel and Edna Pauline (Metzger) Woodling, Sr.
Jack attended Montgomery and Hughesville schools. After high school he enlisted in the US Army Reserves and served eight years. He was a welder for 42 years in Bulk Truck Dept and Sheet Metal Dept at Sprout-Waldron, now Andritz, Muncy, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He retired from Andritz in October 1999, but Jack's hardworking nature refused to let him sit still, so he started a lawn care business in 2005 and worked until this spring.
He was a member of Muncy Masonic Lodge #299, Williamsport Consistory, and the Irem Temple.
In his younger years, he coached Little League in Muncy and Hughesville, and played fast-pitch softball for 19 years on the Sprout-Waldron team. He loved building furniture for himself, family and friends. Jack loved the outdoors and did all his own stunts. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, golfing, working with his son John on the farm, and spending time with family, his children and grandchildren, and friends. He loved a good flea market bargain. Jack hated being the center of attention, mayonnaise, surprise parties, having his picture taken, cold food, new stuff, technology, winter, chapped lips, and sitting still.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Arla (Jacobs) Woodling; two daughters: Danielle (Joseph "Squire") Murray of Hughesville and Janel Woodling of Philadelphia; one son, John Samuel Woodling, III, of Hughesville; two granddaughters: Amanda (Adam) Woodman of Colorado Springs, CO and Abigail (Ryan) Ramsauer of Commerce City, CO; three grandsons: Shaun and Chase Woodling of Hughesville and Brock Woodling of Roswell, NM; two great-granddaughters: Ava Marie and Anna Rose Woodman; three sisters: Mary (Jim) Shaffer, Montgomery; Judy (Leon) Stugart, Hughesville; and Linda Clinger, Milton; many nieces and nephews, and a favorite niece Marni Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Max, Kenny, and Ronnie Woodling; and six sisters: Wanda Blaker, June Houseknecht, Lois Fraley, Phyllis Croman, Ruth Stump, and Doris Eberhart.
A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
In Jack's memory, the family suggests donations be made to Special Olympics at www.specialolympics.org or bestow a kindness on a family member, friend, or stranger. His family wishes to thank the staff of UPMC Susquehanna Muncy and Williamsport for Jack's care. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hughesville Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc.
See you on down the road, Jack!
