Leroy Hopkins Obituary

Leroy Joseph Hopkins passed away at the age of 87 on Saturday, June 14th, 2025, at his daughter's home in Muncy.

Tony was born July 21st, 1937, in Hughesville.  He was the son of the late Harry Leroy Hopkins and Nashla Martha Ashkar.

Tony graduated from Liberty High School in 1955 and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958.  On August 1st of 1959, he married Theresa Jane Myers and together they raised three children in Hughesville.

Tony, like his father, was a carpenter by trade and worked for many years in the Hughesville area for local contractors including Lewis Secules and Edward Aderhold before becoming self-employed.

Tony was an avid hunter and precision shooter.  He was a member of the International Benchrest Shooters.  He competed locally and regionally and once won at Nationals in Mainville.   He also was a talented and much sought after gunsmith.  Tony retired from carpentry in 1997 but continued to work as a part time gunsmith for local dealers, friends, family, and referred customers.  Gunsmithing and precision gun making were his true passion in life.  He spent countless hours perfecting his craft, and in turn, passing his knowledge along to friends and family alike.

Tony was a talented guitarist and performed with many other local artists and bands from the 60’s into the 90’s.  He also enjoyed tractor “pulling” as a hobby.

Friends, neighbors, and family were Tony’s most precious possessions.  He cherished his time with other rifle enthusiasts, spending uncounted hours learning and teaching.  Tony embraced his role as patriarch and treasured his time spent as “Pappy”.

Besides his parents, Tony was preceded in death by sisters Mary Katherine (Kitty) Young and Patty Vanore.

Tony is survived by daughters, Lisa Hopkins and Lynne Hopkins-Alvarez (Moses Alvarez) of Muncy; son Lance Hopkins (Sandra) of Elysburg; sisters Barbara Wade of Los Fresnos, Texas and Judy Hopkins of Avon Park, Florida; stepson Wayne Waltman of Larry’s Creek; granddaughters Sacha and Aja Alvarez and Katarina Hutchinson; two great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A “Celebration of Life” is planned for Sunday, July 20th at Keiss Memorial Park in Muncy Creek Township from 12:00 to 3:00 pm.  All friends and family are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
